One Big Step…

I’ve been on my antidepressant Lexapro for about 5 years now, but that wasn’t the beginning of my depression or anxiety…

I started feeling probably slightly depressed from around 12 years old. I actually remember just crying a lot for no reason! Maybe it was the hormones changing inside my body, or maybe it was that everything felt so overwhelming. I felt like that my life was so unfair, and that I just wanted to live in a “normal” family!

Depression

I then progressed to self mutilation by about 14 years old, and would do it out mainly out of anger. But then i would get anxiety of wondering how the heck am I going to cover this up for school?! I continued on and off like this till about 16 which was when i met my now husband. He was actually the first caring boy i actually met that didn’t only care and think about one thing, that most teenage boys do!

He introduced me to God and how Jesus will forgive all sins. This felt amazing to me, the broken child that felt like she was just barely treading water! I then gave my whole life to God, and I felt so amazingly happy that i found someone that could lean on no matter what!

When I got my first full time job at around 18 i started getting slight anxiety attacks. I would be walking to work then all of a sudden I would feel like my heart was going to explode out of my chest, or I was going to have a heart attack right then and there! I would get the sweaty palms, heart racing and light headed feeling and knew “great another anxiety attack is about to take place”. I hated myself, why after putting everything into God’s hands he would let my body do this to me!

Well I struggled through it each day at a time….Got married to my teenage heart throb, moved out of home and then fell pregnant with our first child (obviously not that fast)!

Once I fell pregnant the anxiety started to not be as bad as I was focusing all my energy onto this amazing blessing that I always wanted! It was probably the most exciting time of my life, experiencing pregnancy for the first time. I started tracking each week what was happening with my little jelly bean. What part was growing, when was “it’s” heart going to start beating…It was amazing! So for a while I had a break from the dark cloud that was always hanging around, but it soon reared its ugly head again…

When Amy-lee was around 8 months old I was diagnosed with postpartum depression and was prescribed 10mg of Lexapro. It took 6 weeks for the medication to work fully, but when It did I felt amazingly better!

Now fast forward 5 or so years, and I’m finally ready to take the plunge to cut down and then hopefully come off the medication fully. I am in a much better place right now…not only in my relationship with God and my husband but also with my children. I have grown ALOT in the last 5 years, and finally feel like I am my own person and that I believe in MYSELF!

In the past two days I have cut down my medication by half which will continue for a month or two. (Now this was prescribed by my doctor, please don’t ever cut down or stop taking your medication unless told by YOUR doctor)! I have already had slight withdrawal feelings of headaches and slight muscle aches. But I have diligently been applying my Stress Ease essential oil to my wrists, and my lovely husband massaged my calves with coconut oil and Lavender oil to ease the muscle aches.

I have a bit of a way to go, but I’m very very very excited to give it my best shot! I am so glad I know so much more about healthy eating and essential oils now, as I know I could never do it without either of those two things!

I will keep you updated with how everything goes, and the things I find that is helping my progress.

Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree Oil)

Tea treYoung-Living-Malaleuca-Alternifolia-Essential-Oile oil always reminds me of home! It was probably one of the first essential oils i used in products as a child growing up in Australia. It reminds me of gum trees, koalas and the great outdoors!

I’ve recently been using this oil on my pimples that have just broken out (so annoying)! One drop is more then enough to cover a few blemishes.

Included in Meadow Mist Deodorant, ClaraDerm, Melrose, Purification

Topical – Can be applied neat when used topically. Apply to area concerned or reflex points.

Aromatic – Diffuse or inhale the aroma directly

Internal – Take in capsules

Ingredients: Melaleuca (Tea Tree Oil)

Uses:

  • Use a cotton swab to apply Melaleuca Alternifolia directly to the face.
  • Add a drop to your shampoo to support a healthy-feeling scalp.
  • If you forget to transfer you
    r laundry to the dryer in a timely manner, run another washing cycle with a few drops of Melaleuca Alternifolia added to the water.
  • Add a drop of Melaleuca Alternifolia to soften the skin around a splinter before removing it.
  • Freshen and deodorize your rugs. Combine a few drops each of Melaleuca Alternifolia and Lavender with ¼ cup baking soda. Leave mixture overnight to let the oils absorb into the baking soda, and then sprinkle over rug and vacuum immediately. (As a bonus, your vacuum will smell fresher, too!)
  • Diffuse Melaleuca Alternifolia to purify the air in your home or workspace.

Green = Neat (can be used without dilution)
Orange = Dilute for children and those with sensitive skin
Red = Dilute

A Healthy Thyroid is a Happy Body!

I’ve just found an awesome podcast called The Essential Oil Revolution , and it has some really interesting  information. Not only on Young Living products but also about health for your body!

The most recent one I listened to was about having a healthy thyroid. Now if you listen to the podcast you will get more of the scientific information on it but I’m just going to give you the key points I took out of it.

First off, I had heard all the talk about a healthy thyroid but I never really knew what it really meant. I thought that it only affected a few people, but I was so wrong!

Your Thyroid is located near your adams apple and it helps to control your metabolism and keeps your body healthy.

If you have an under functioning thyroid, you will get symptoms of…

  • Weight Gain
  • Fatigue
  • Continuous yeast infections
  • Decreased immunity

If you have an overactive thyroid, you will get symptoms of…

  • Anxiety
  • Restlessness
  • Difficulty sleeping

I have just listed a few that were mentioned on the podcast, but I’m sure there’s probably many other symptoms also.

Isn’t it amazing that such a small part of the body, plays host to a much bigger job!

So what do you do to keep your thyroid healthy? Here’s a list of things you can do…

  1. Stop eating foods with bromide in the ingredients. This is mainly in a lot of baked goods and plastics. And it affects the thyroid by building up inside the body
  2. Get plenty of iodine into your body! Apparently like many things today, we are all extremely lacking in iodine. Iodine is relatively high in leafy greens, seaweed and kelp.
  3. Eat good quality brazil nuts. These are high in selenium, and you will only need to eat one nut a day! (I could handle this!)
  4. Don’t eat soy products (unless it is fermented) as this messes with your oestrogen levels
  5. Try to mainly eat organic foods if you can
  6. Stay away from plastic items as much as possible. (We’ve already heard what BPA can do to our bodies).
  7. When buying new clothes, make sure you wash them throughly before wearing. You know that tag that says “wash before wear”, well it’s not just for cleanliness. Clothes that have fire retardants on it can affect your body as it will be absorbed through your skin
  8. You can start taking Young Livings Thyroxin which will help with a healthy thyroid function
  9. Also Ningxia Red, which is already an amazing drink in itself will also help!
  10. Every day apply Endoflex and Myrtle with a carrier oil onto your thyroid and adrenal glands

Peach and Pear Jam

IMG_7292So I’m quite a frugal person, but I actually wasn’t always like this. I was used to getting everything I wanted growing up, and always had the “top brands” of food.

My husband still mentions to this day about how he married me for my Fruche’ yoghurt! I was an only child most of my life, so it was easy enough for my mum and dad to give me whatever i wanted.

My husband on the other hand grew up with two other siblings. So he had grown up eating nearly all meals home cooked, and most of the time these food items were “no name” brand. So I think his upbringing has rubbed off onto me with having 3 kids of our own!

Well I had 3 peaches on the bench that were starting to go bit wrinkly so I knew i needed to make something with them before they started to go mouldy and furry!

I just made this jam up on the spot using the plum jam recipe that is in the basic thermomix cookbook as the inspiration.

Ingredients:

  • 260g Peaches
  • 180g Pear
  • 350g Jam Setting Sugar
  • 20g Lemon Juice

Directions:

  1. Cut the peaches up around the seed (you don’t need to remover the skin)
  2. Cut the pears up around the core
  3. Now weigh everything into the Thermomix
  4. Set the Thermomix to 100c 60mins and speed 2
  5. When there’s 10 minutes remaining take the MC lid off the top to let the steam out
  6. Now your jam should be ready, but to check do the frozen plate method
  7. Make sure your jar is clean, sterilised and hot before putting the jam in

That’s it!

The Power of Thieves!

thieves-cleaner-set-550x350When I first saw Thieves Household Cleaner in the Young Living catalogue, I couldn’t believe how expensive it was! But that’s when i thought that you just used it as is. I then found out you use it by
diluting small amounts to replace all your chemical cleaners in your house!

With 5 people in our household, I am constantly cleaning, so It’s good to know that using Thieves I won’t be hurting anyone using other nasty chemicals! It also smells divine and won’t give you a headache.

If you do a search on Pinterest of “Thieves Household Cleaner” you will literally find 100’s of recipes on how to use it to replace all your household cleaners; but i won’t give you all those recipes.

Here are 15 uses that you can use Thieves Household Cleaner; but remember the uses are endless…

  1. Make your own foaming soap
  2. Use it to make your own washing liquid
  3. Make your own dishwashing liquid
  4. Window cleaner
  5. Shower cleaner
  6. Toilet cleaner
  7. Floor cleaner
  8. Kitchen bench cleaner
  9. Oven cleaner
  10. Clean your microwave
  11. Clean your garbage bins
  12. Clean the dishwasher
  13. Wipe down baby change matts
  14. Wash your car
  15. Use as a fruit and veg wash

This may become my favourite Young Living product!

Time For Change!

So we just got our electricity bill yesterday and let’s just say I about dropped to the floor when I saw the figure! It’s been a very hot few months here in North Brisbane Australia, and I have been getting lazy by using air-conditioning every day and also putting the clothes in the dryer instead of hanging outside.

So it’s time for a change in our household!

Here’s a list of things i will be doing to try and cut this electricity bill down…

  • Only use the dryer if it has been raining for two or more days
  • Wash on cold wash cycle
  • Only use the air conditioner if it’s unbearable
  • Try and teach the kids (and maybe a husband) to turn off lights if the room is not in use

It will still be hard to get the bill down to an absolute minimum as my husband works from home, so his air-conditioning needs to be on all day while he’s in his office.

Lavender

young-living-lavender-essential-oil-blendLavender is a great essential oil for winding down your children. This is probably also my favourite essential oil for the smell. I add about 2 drops to 2 tablespoons of oil and then add it to my children bath. Not only does the essential oil relax them, but the oil also naturally moisturizers their skin! Let’s just say I’m in LOVE with this oil!

When diffused, Lavender adds a clean and fresh scent to any room and is a relaxing addition to baths and body care products.

Included in many products, but here are just a few… Stress Away, Tranquil Roll-On, RutaVala, Forgiveness, and Harmony.

Topical – Can be applied neat when used topically. Apply directly to area of concern or to reflex points.

Aromatic – Diffuse or inhale the aroma directly.

Internal – Place 1-2 Drops under the tongue, or take in capsules. Can also be used in beverages or as a flavouring in cooking.

Ingredients: Lavender

Uses: 

  • Diffuse Lavender for a comforting and calming scent
  • Unwind by adding a few drops to a nighttime bath
  • Diffuse for a fresh, clean scent and to eliminate odors
  • May complement some of your favorite shampoos, lotions, or skin care products

 

Green = Neat (can be used without dilution)
Orange = Dilute for children and those with sensitive skin
Red = Dilute

My Family’s Bread Recipe

This recipe makes a nice big loaf of bread that the whole family will love! It’s delicious and fluffy and will save you from buying a loaf of bread ever again!

Not only does it feel great making your own bread, but you also know exactly what is inside it.

Ingredients
440g Warm Water
3 Teaspoons of Yeast
3 Teaspoons of Bread Improver
750g of flour of choice (Bakers flour, White flour, Wholegrain flour etc.)
1 Teaspoon of Salt

Directions

  1. In your thermomix add all the ingredients in the above order
  2. Mix on Speed 6 for 10 seconds
  3. Then turn the dial to the closed lid icon and set time for 6 minutes knead function
  4. Once done put in a well oiled bowl and cover with a tea towel for 1 hour or doubled in size (may be quicker when you have hot weather)
  5. Then punch down the down in the bowl and move to a baking paper lined bread tin, cover with the tea towel again and let rise for another 20 minutes or so.
  6. While rising set the oven to 180c fan forced setting
  7. Put the bread in the oven and bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown, and when tapped it will sound hollow

Enjoy warm with some delicious butter and some strawberry jam, or any other way you like!

Stress Away

stress awayThis is the first essential oil i received in my beginner box by Young Living. My first impression is that it’s a beautiful quite mild smelling essential oil, so great for a beginner like myself! I have been enjoying it in my diffuser having it fill my house with its beautiful smell. I haven’t been too stressed lately so haven’t had to test it in that situation yet, but I will give a review using it when life is in full “stress mode”!

Topical – Apply to wrists or the back of neck. If you are going outside within 12 hours though, apply under clothing

Aromatic – Apply 6-10 drops in your Young Living Diffuser

Ingredients: Copaiba, Lime, Cedarwood, Vanilla, Ocotea, Lavender

 

Green = Neat (can be used without dilution)
Orange = Dilute for children and those with sensitive skin
Red = Dilute

Hi there, and welcome to my new blog!

This is a place for me to express all the things i love doing! I enjoy cooking from scratch using my thermomix, playing with my three beautiful children and doing housework *shock horror*! I have also just gotten into essential oils and wanted to blog about that journey also. I have been on antidepressants since my first born was around 8 months old so I am really hoping to document my progress of coming off them slowly by using diet and essential oils.

I will add recipes to this blog, my essential oil journey and recipes using essential oils; and of course things to do with my family!
